Course Objective

The aim of this course is to introduce the main forms and genres used in Turkish folk literature, to examine the characteristics and historical development of these genres and to enable students to understand how these genres function in literary texts. In addition, it is aimed to reveal the place of folk literature genres in both oral and written traditions.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to recognize the basic forms and genres in Turkish folk literature
2   To be able to analyze the function and properties of forms and genres in literary texts
3   To be able to analyze the formal elements and language features of folk literature
4   To be able to comprehend the historical development processes of forms and genres
5   To be able to understand how the genres in Turkish folk literature are shaped in cultural and social context
6   To be able to determine the place and function of folk literature genres in literary texts

6 The classification of the forms and genres of verse which are widely used in folk poetry
7 Form and genre in anonymous folk poetry before Islam
8 Midterm Exam
9 Form and genre in anonymous folk poetry in Islamic period
10 Forms and genres of syllabled verse in minstrel poetry
11 Prosody verse forms in minstrel poetry
12 The forms of syllabic verse in dervish poetry
13 The forms of verse in dervish poetry which depend on classical literature
14 Genres in dervish poetry
15 A general evaluation of Turkish folk poetry in terms of the features of form and genre
16 Final Exam
