Course Objective

The aim of this course is to examine the stages, theoretical-methodological transformations, and contemporary approaches of historiography in Turkey and to explore how these are reflected in history education, fostering students critical and comparative thinking on Turkish historiography

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   1. Analyzes the development of historiography in Turkey from the Ottoman period to the present
2   2. Discusses the relationship between ideology, identity, and nationalism in Turkish historical writing
3   3. Compares traditional and contemporary methods in Turkish historiography
4   4. Links academic historiography in Turkey with historical narratives in school textbooks
5   5. Identifies traces of contemporary historiographical approaches in the national curriculum
6   6. Evaluates Turkish examples of digital history, local history, and public historiography

1 Introduction to historiography in Turkey: Ottoman chronicles and official historiography
2 Historiography in the Republican era: The Turkish History Thesis and ideological orientations
3 Institutionalization of academic historiography (TTK, universities, journals)
4 Post-1980 historiography: Identity, culture, and social history approaches
5 Examples of microhistory, local history, and oral history in Turkey
6 Historical narratives and discourse analysis in 9th grade history textbooks
7 Midterm Exam
8 Digital historiography: Digital archives and online resources in Turkey
9 Popular historiography and historical narratives in documentaries
10 Historical empathy and multiperspectivity in history education: Turkish cases
11 Official history, alternative narratives, and critical approaches in textbooks
12 Representation of women, minorities, and the others in Turkish historiography
13 Critical historiography: Relationship between academic and public history
14 Student projects: Documentary, microhistory, or digital history presentation
