Course Objective

Perceiving the polyphonic musical structure in tonal music, recognizing the harmonic relationship of voices within a tonal context, acquiring skills in melodic and harmonic dictation, sight-singing, transcription, analysis, and polyphonic writing.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Be able to write polyphonic dictation in major and minor keys at intermediate and advanced levels.
2   Be able to create exercises with two, three, and four voices.
3   Be able to practice sight-reading and dictation with different clefs.
4   Be able to perform advanced rhythmic reading exercises.
5   Be able to develop polyphonic transcription skills and provide accompaniment.
6   Be able to analyze polyphonic tonal melodies harmonically and formally, and transform monophonic melodies into similar polyphonic structures.

Course Contents

1 1 Introduction to the course objectives and resources. Pre-assessment for level determination.
2 2 Dictation exercises in various tonalities and time signatures.
3 3 Formal and harmonic analysis exercises.
4 4 Two-voice and three-voice application exercises.
5 5 Hearing and writing exercises for three, four, and five-voice chords.
6 6 Transposition writing, playing, and sight-singing exercises. Sight-singing exercises with the movable do method.
7 7 Sight-singing and playing different parts simultaneously using both fixed and movable do methods.
8 8 Midterm Exam
9 9 Transcription exercises. Reading, writing, analyzing, and creating polyphonic melodies.
10 10 Transcription exercises. Reading, writing, analyzing, and creating polyphonic melodies.
11 11 Studies on the reflections of modal structures.
12 12 Compositional exercises: writing and creating educational melodies.
13 13 Compositional exercises: writing and creating educational melodies.
14 14 General review. Compositional exercises: writing and creating educational melodies.
15 15 Final Exam
