Course Objective

The course Minorities in Türkiye aims to examine the process that minorities and the concept of minority have gone through from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic of Türkiye. First of all, the emergence of nationalism, nation-state and minority law in the modern world will be discussed, and the issues of minority in the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Türkiye will be discussed. Beyond these, the effects of minority issues on the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire will be evaluated, while also taking into account the political legacy left to the new regime in this regard. The concept of minority in the Republic of Türkiye will be defined based on the legal and political framework drawn by the Treaty of Lausanne.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Weekly topics are evaluated together by the instructor after they are summarized in light of the students' previous readings, and students are also encouraged to make short presentations on a topic of their choice during the term (as much as possible).

Attendance at 70% of the classes is mandatory. The instructor reserves the right to conduct practical exams. The grades from these exams will be added to the midterm and final exam grades.
