Course Objective

Descriptive linguistics courses aim to analyze the structure, functions, and usage of language. This course examines how language is organized, the characteristics of linguistic units (such as sounds, words, and sentences), and how these operate within social and cultural contexts. Students develop skills to understand linguistic phenomena using descriptive methods, analyze grammatical structures, and make comparisons between various languages. Such a course focuses not only on linguistic theories but also on the real-world use of language.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   1. Being able to define the basic components of Descriptive Linguistics (sound, word, sentence) and how these components come together.
2   2. Being able to distinguish linguistic structures in different languages.
3   3. Understanding the linguistic rules of language and explaining correct usage with examples.
4   4. Being able to conduct your own analysis using basic research methods in the field of Descriptive Linguistics.
5   5. Approaching linguistic phenomena from a critical perspective and interpreting arguments related to language use.
6   6. Understanding the diversity of different languages and dialects and being able to draw conclusions from them.

1 1 Definition of Descriptive Linguistics History and significance; Descriptive vs. normative linguistics.
2 2 Fundamental Components of Language Sounds, morphemes, words, and sentences; Building blocks of language.
3 3 Phonetics and Phonology Physical properties of sounds (phonetics); Sound systems and rules (phonology).
4 4 Morphology Types of morphemes: roots and affixes; Word structure and morphological analysis.
5 5 Syntax Sentence structure and types of sentences; Syntax rules.
6 6 Semantics Word meaning and sentence meaning; Meaning relationships (synonyms, antonyms).
7 7 Usage and Pragmatics Language use in context; Meaning and inference in communication.
8 8 Midterm exam
9 9 Language and Society Sociolinguistic approaches; Language diversity and sociocultural factors.
10 10 Language Change and Development Language evolution and historical linguistics; Dialects and varieties.
11 11 Emotion and Expression Emotional aspects of language; Forms of emotional expression in texts.
12 12 Language and Identity The role of language in identity formation; Ethnic and cultural identity.
