Course Objective

The aim of this course is to have knowledge about the fundamentals of Geothermics and its applications in earth sciences

1   Learning the basic terms of Geothermics
2   Understanding the types of heat transfer mechanisms in the Earth
3   Learning temperature measurement methods
4   Understanding how to measure the thermal properties of rocks
5   Calculation of heat flow
6   Integration of Heat Flow studies with problems in Earth science
7   Computing solutions for Earth science problems using heat flow measurements

Course Contents

1 What is Geothermics, Basic Concepts, and History Distribution of Temperature within the Earth
2 Heat Transfer in the Earth Heat Flow Data applications in Geothermal Exploration
3 Methods for Calculating Heat Flow (Interval, Bullard, Numerical Inversion, etc.) Interpretation of Heat Flow Distribution in Different Lithospheric Structures (Subduction Transform Faults, Extension Zones etc.)
4 Methods of Field Temperature Measurements, Temperature Sensors and Geothermal Gradient Distribution of Heat Flow in Türkiye
5 Mitigation of Environmental Effects, Corrections (Topography, Sedimentation, Erosion, Paleoclimate, etc.), and Qualification
6 Thermal Properties of Rocks and Devices
7 Temperature and Pressure effect on the Thermal Properties of Rocks
8 Heat Production within the Earth and its Contribution to Surface Heat Flow
9 Distribution of Heat Flow in Continents and Oceans
10 Regional Patterns of Heat Flow
