Course Objective

This course will mainly examine the enlargement policies of the European Union (EU). To do so the course will start with a brief introduction of the EU, its historical background, development and structure. The course will focus on the enlargement policy of the EU covering conceptual and theoretical framework, Europeanization process, history and waves of EU enlargement. Membership conditionality and enlargement process will be analyzed through alternative theories and enlargement cases.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Recognise the enlargement waves of the EU in order to identify the Union's role in member and candidate states.
2   Demonstrate understanding of the EU enlargement policy in order to assess how it impacts its periphery.
3   Develop skills to make reasoned and critical arguments.
4   Improve skills to make presentations in the classroom.
5   Develop skills to engage in discussions with other students as well as the lecturer.
6   Develop skills to find, use and evaluate the relevant sources, including academic and media material.

2. Learners will explain the European Union's enlargement policy within the framework of foreign policy and security policy.
3. Learners will explain the effects of the European Union's enlargement policy on the candidate countries.
