Course Objective

The aim of the course is to explain the production techniques of Ancient Greek ceramics in detail and to improve students' knowledge of identifying and dating the ceramics they will encounter in excavations.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Gaining information about geometric period ceramics
2   Gaining knowledge about Geometric period ceramic production techniques (Paste, slip, production techniques, decoration styles, kiln types and firing styles)
3   Repetition of Archaic period ceramic groups
4   Gaining information about archaic period ceramic production techniques (paste, slip, production techniques, decoration styles, kiln types and firing styles)
5   Repetition of Classical Period ceramic groups
6   Acquiring information about classical period ceramic production techniques (Paste, slip, production techniques, decoration styles, kiln types and firing styles)
7   Describe the periodic development of ancient Greek ceramics in mainland Greece and Ionia-Aiolia-Caria and the ceramic production techniques in each period.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Theoretical lessons will be taught with slides containing visual findings. By visiting nearby archaeological sites, excavations and museums, the theoretical information covered in the lesson will also be seen in real life and practical information will be given about ceramic techniques. When the programs of the ceramics department of the faculty of fine arts are suitable, joint workshops will be organized with faculty members and the information given in the lessons in theory will be tried to be reproduced in ancient conditions in practice.
