Course Objective

To develop knowledge of musical forms and to analyze the harmonic and formal structures of monophonic and polyphonic musical works.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   1. To define the concept of form in music and explain its historical development and significance in musical analysis.
2   2. To identify and analyze musical components such as motif, figure, phrase, period, and texture in both monophonic and polyphonic works.
3   3. To perform harmonic analysis alongside formal analysis and evaluate the relationship between harmony and form in the studied pieces.
4   4. To explain and analyze the structural characteristics of fundamental musical forms such as song form, rondo, and sonata.
5   5. To effectively use appropriate methods of representation (e.g., diagrams, charts, graphs) during the process of formal analysis.
6   6. To analyze the formal and harmonic structures of musical works from different historical periods and stylistic contexts.

1 Definition, importance, and necessity of form in music.
2 Concepts of motif, figure, and texture.
3 Development and transformation within motif structure: studies on selected pieces.
4 Development and transformation within motif structure; analysis of selected pieces and musical writing exercises related to the studied topics.
5 The concepts of phrase and period in music through harmonic analysis.
6 Lied forms; listening to selected works and performing formal and harmonic analysis.
7 Lied forms; listening to selected works and performing formal and harmonic analysis.
8 General review, Course evaluation, Midterm
9 Rondo form; listening to selected works.
10 Formal and harmonic analysis studies.
