Course Objective

The aim of this course is to examine the history of Turkish music within historical, cultural, and social contexts, and to provide students with knowledge of traditional, religious, folk, and art music genres. The course aims to help students understand the development of Turkish music across different periods, recognize key composers, performance practices, and music institutions, and grasp the social functions of music throughout history.

2   Compares pre-Islamic, Ottoman, and post-Republican Turkish music cultures
3   Distinguishes between traditional Turkish art music, folk music, and religious music genres
4   Identifies the key composers, performers, and institutions in Turkish music history
5   Explains music reforms implemented during the Republican period
6   Analyzes the historical transformation of polyphony, notation systems, and music education policies
7   Evaluates Turkish music history in relation to its social, cultural, and political contexts
