Course Objective

he aim of this course is to develop students advanced technical and musical proficiency on the viola. The course focuses on transitions between different positions, varieties of vibrato, ornamentation techniques, bow control, and the refinement of interpretative skills. Additionally, it aims to strengthen students individual practice habits, support the development of their unique musical expression, and enable them to present a technically and artistically rich repertoire by the end of the semester.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Performs shifts to and beyond third position with technical accuracy and musical expression.
2   Demonstrates technical control by applying various bowing techniques (e.g., spiccato, martelé, staccato).
3   Diversifyies their vibrato technique and use it effectively within musical works.
4   Performs ornamented passages with stylistic accuracy.
5   Interprets advanced national and international repertoire pieces with both technical and musical competence.
6   Evaluates their own performances from a critical perspective and formulate a personal development plan.
7   Develops original interpretations that reflect artistic expression.

3 Shifting passages and etudes between 3rd and 5th positions

6 Introduction to ornamentation techniques: grace notes, mordents
7 Integration of ornamented passages into repertoire studies

9 Technical and interpretive analysis of selected national/international works
10 Performance simulations and feedback-based practice

12 Advanced etude and scale studies
