Course Objective

The main purpose of this course is to provide students with the ability to deeply examine and interpret important poems from different periods of Turkish literature. Students will be able to analyze the structural features of poems (verse forms, meter, rhyme, repeated voice, etc.), themes, images, symbols, sound and rhythm characteristics, the poet's style, his/her relationship with literary movements, and historical, social, and cultural contexts.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   1. Explain the historical development and important movements of poetry in Turkish literature.
2   2. Will be able to recognize the leading poets and poems of Divan literature, Folk literature, Tanzimat, Servet-i Fünun, National Literature, Republic and later periods.
3   3. Will be able to analyze the verse forms, meters (aruz, syllable), rhyme and repeated voice patterns of selected Turkish poems.
4   4. Will be able to identify and interpret the basic themes, images, symbols and allegorical narratives in the poems examined.
5   5. Will be able to determine the sound and rhythm characteristics of poems (alliteration, assonance, emphasis, pause, etc.) and evaluate their effects.
6   6. Will be able to analyze the poets' original styles, language use and poetic approaches.
7   7. Will be able to relate the poems examined to the historical, social, cultural and political contexts of the period to which they belong.
8   8. Will be able to apply the basic literary criticism approaches used in poetry studies (formalist criticism, semiotic criticism, psychoanalytical criticism, Marxist criticism, etc.).

The success of the student is determined by the midterm and final exam grades. Apart from this, there are no special evaluation criteria.
