Course Objective

The aim of this course is to teach fundamentals of linguistics; to help students to gain the knowledge of
phonology, phonetics, semantics; and to allow them to develop necessary skills to use
this knowledge to compare and contrast.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   The student defines linguistics, competence, performance, components of linguistics and language universals,
2   gives examples to sign languages, artifical languages, and communication among animals,
3   compares the sounds of English and Turkish languages,
4   gives examples to linking and stress in English language,
5   conducts semantic analysis of the words and sentences,
6   conducts comparative analysis of English and Turkish languages.
