Course Objective

The aim of this course is to analyze authentic listening materials and speech samples used in different discourses; basic listening and phonetic skills such as discriminating minimal pairs and formulating phonetic transcriptions of problematic sounds; higher level listening skills and strategies; the fundamentals of listening and phonetics namely vowels, consonants, stress in words, rhythm and intonation as well as the usage of phonetic alphabet for learning and production.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Understand sound production mechanisms.
2   Analyze the acoustic properties of speech sounds.
3   Distinguish between various speech sounds through improved auditory discrimination.
4   Transcribe spoken language using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA).
