Course Objective

This course aims to teach fundamental concepts related to, properties of matter, fundamental chemical laws, structure of atom, atom models, periodic table, chemical bonds, chemical reactions, liquids, solids and gases and to gain problem solving skills

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to apply basic chemistry laws.
2   To be able to compare atomic models.
3   To be able to draw Lewis structures of compounds.
4   Explaining molecular geometries according to VSEPR.
5   To be able to comprehend the gas laws
6   To be able to make stoichiometric calculations in all kinds of reaction environments and calculate the theoretical and percent yields of the reaction.
7   Being aware of the general properties of solids, liquids and gases.
8   Comparing the general properties of solids, liquids and gases.

2 Atom models, atom and its structure, molecules and ions, basic laws
3 Electronic structure of atoms, light-matter interaction, atomic spectra, wave mechanics
4 Quantum numbers, hund's rule, spherical symmetry
5 Periodic properties of elements, atomic sizes, inorganic compounds and naming
6 Chemical bonds, formal charge, lewis structures
7 Molecular geometry, resonance, VSEPR
8 Midterm evaluation, midterm exam
9 MOT, Hybrid orbitals
10 Stoichiometry, Calculation with chemical formulas and equations, heat measurements
11 Thermochemical equations, Hess' law, enthalpies of formation
12 Intermolecular bonds
13 Gases and their general properties, kinetic theory, real gases, Diffusion
14 Liquids, Evaporation, heat of vaporization, boiling point, viscosity
15 Solids, freezing point, vapor pressure, phase diagrams, lattice energies
16 Final Exam
