Course Objective

The aim of this course is to give the student an understanding of the basic concepts of genetics; the ability to relate the gene, genotype and phenotype; the ability to having analytical thinking, to generating experimental logic and to solving problems related to genetics; an understanding of Mendelian and Non-Mendelian genetics, models of inheritance, laws of probability, pedigree trees, sex determination, gene linkage, chromosomal mapping, extrachromosomal inheritance and chromosomal mutations and the ability to relating these topics.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Learn the basic concepts of genetics
2   Appreciate basic principles of heredity
3   Relate the approaches of different disciplines such as molecular biology, biochemistry, statistics with genetics
4   Relate the gene, genotype and phenotype
5   Adapt the genetically issues on current life
6   Examine the relationship between the concepts and experiments of genetics
7   Search genetics databases and evaluate information from multiple sources and viewpoints by means of oral and written manners
8   Relate between experimental logic, analytical thinking, quantitative analysis and problem solving

3 Mendelian Genetics; Mendel Laws, Monohybrid and Dihybrid Crosses, Reciprocal, Test Crosses, Phenotype and Genotype Ratios
4 Probability: Multiplication and Addition Law, Conditional Probability, Binomial Theorem, Chi-square Test, Pedigree Trees
5 Extensions of Mendelian Genetics: Complete, Incomplete Dominance, Multiple Alleles, Incompatibility Alleles, Lethal Alleles, Pleiotropy
