Course Objective

The aim of this course is to provide students with a theoretical knowledge at basic level about the chemical composition of the seawater and the chemical processes taking place in the marine environment.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Know and understand the general concepts about the chemical structure of the constituents of the marine environment. 2   Be able to relate the chemical processes that take place in the marine environment with each other. 3   Describe and relate the concepts of temperature, salinity, chlorinity, conductivity, and density that are physicochemical properties of seawater. 4   Understand the basic concepts of major and minor elements, dissolved gases, and nutrients in the marine environment. 5   Be able to explain the formation of organic matter in the marine environment, carbon dioxide, carbon cycle, and the characteristics of the anoxic marine environments at a basic level.
