Course Objective

This course aims to provide students from different disciplines with the opportunity to explore the interaction between art and mathematics. By understanding how mathematical concepts are used in art, students will develop creative thinking skills and explore interdisciplinary connections.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Explain with examples how the concepts of culture and mathematics are intertwined.
2   Will be able to compare and evaluate the number systems, measurement units and geometric approaches of different societies.
3   Will be able to make mathematical analyses on traditional games, works of art and architectural structures.
4   Will be able to effectively design presentations and small application projects that include cultural mathematics examples.
5   Will be able to critically discuss how mathematics permeates cultural identity and social practice.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Introduction: Culture, Mathematics and Ethno-mathematics Course introduction; general overview of the concept of ethnomathematics and the relationship between culture and mathematics.
2 Number Systems and Fonts Comparison of Babylonian, Mayan, Indian and Arabic number systems; historical development.
3 Calenders and Time Measurement Solar calendar, lunar calendar, lunisolar calendars; divisions of the year according to cultures.
4 Units of Measure and Trade Measurements of length, volume and weight; case study of ancient and traditional market measurement methods.
5 Architecture & Geometry: Temples & Palaces Geometric analysis of ancient Egyptian pyramids, Japanese pagodas and Ottoman mosques.
6 Textile Patterns and Upholstery Symmetry-tessellation workshop in Anatolian kilims, African kente fabrics and Islamic upholstery.
7 Traditional Games and Probability Basic probability and strategy analysis on the games of Mancala, Senet and Go.
8 Midterm Exam
9 Magic Squares and Numerology Magic square applications and cultural meanings in Chinese, Sanskrit and Western numerology.
10 Music and Mathematics Study of rhythm patterns, frequency ratios and chord structures of different cultures.
11 Golden Ratio and Art Use of proportion in Renaissance paintings, African masks, and Japanese tea ceremony objects.
12 Fractals and Cultural Imagery in Nature Plant patterns in Amazonian culture; repetitive patterns in Aboriginal drawings.
13 Ethno-mathematics Project Workshop I Field research and presentation preparation on a selected cultural mathematics topic in small groups.
14 Ethno-mathematics Project Workshop II Implementation and interim evaluation of project designs; peer feedback.
15 Final Exam
