Course Objective

The aim of this course is to enable students to acquire both theoretical and practical knowledge of the Old Turkic writing system, specifically the Köktürk (Göktürk) alphabet. Students will be trained to recognize and read texts written in this alphabet, perform accurate transliteration and transcription, and analyze the linguistic and historical features of the texts using scientific methods.

1   Explain the structure, origin, and usage areas of the Köktürk alphabet.
2   Read and transcribe texts written in the Köktürk script.
3   Analyze the grammatical features of Old Turkic inscriptions.
4   Contextually evaluate historical texts and their meanings.
5   Compare the linguistic features of Old Turkic with Modern Turkish.
6   Interpret the cultural and historical background of Köktürk inscriptions.
7   Conduct transliteration, transcription, and translation using academic methods.

3 Forms of the letters in manuscripts and stone inscriptions
4 Concepts of transcription and transliteration
5 Basic reading exercises with simple words and sentences
6 General information and historical context of the Orkhon inscriptions
7 Kül Tigin Inscription: Introduction and initial lines
8 General review, course evaluation, midterm exam
9 Tonyukuk Inscription: Introduction and text analysis
10 Grammatical features: Verb conjugations, noun compounds
11 Discussions on the cultural, social, and political content of the inscriptions
12 Translation exercises into Modern Turkish
13 Presentation and evaluation of research assignments
14 General review and applied text reading practice
15 Final exam

The student's success is determined by the grade he/she will receive from the midterm and final exams. Apart from this, there is no special evaluation criterion.
