Course Objective |
This course aims to examine the phenomenon of populism, which has become a significant political force in contemporary European politics. After presenting different theoretical approaches to the main characteristics and dynamics of populism, the reasons for its current rise will be analyzed in the light of the history of populism in Europe. It will then question the effects of the transformation of populist parties, especially populist radical right-wing parties, into established actors on existing political systems that center parties have dominated for many years. The electoral success of populist parties on the right and left wings will be explained, focusing on both the party and the electorate sides. Finally, the impact of the rise of populist parties on liberal democratic institutions and at the policy level, particularly on immigration, welfare, and citizenship policies, as well as reactions to populism will be analyzed. All these analyses will take into account both the national and EU levels. |
