Course Objective

Recognizing that divorce is not solely a legal procedure but also a psychological one, the goal of this course is to equip family counselling students with the knowledge and skills to navigate the divorce process more constructively. The aim is to minimize the psychological impact on children during and after divorce. This course seeks to empower psychologists specializing in the 'family and divorce' field, offering them academic competence and practical skills.

The course endeavors to provide family counselling students with the necessary knowledge and skills to foster healthier parenting practices both pre and post-divorce. Through various interventions and techniques, students will learn to address the challenges of divorce and separation, promoting a more positive and supportive environment for the well-being of children.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   At the end of the course, the students; 1. Be able to recognize family conflicts and their negative effects,
2   2. Recognize the negative and destructive effects of family conflicts on children,
3   3. Recognize the negative and destructive effects of involving children in family disputes,
4   4. Be able to recognize the process of parental alienation and its negative and destructive effects on children,
5   5. Be able to develop and apply new methods to prevent parental alienation,
6   6. To be able to recognize and distinguish marital and parenting roles and identities during the divorce process,
7   7. To be able to recognize and explain the types of divorce and custody,
8   8. Be able to develop and implement a parenting plan during the divorce process,
9   9. Have information about co-parenting after divorce,
10   10. Develop a program for divorced couples on how to co-parent their children,

2 2. Interparental conflict and its impact on children. 12.The phenomenon of parental alienation and its characteristics.
3 3. The effects of divorce on children and the transmission of these effects to future generations. 13.Strategies used to alienate children from their parents.
4 4. Children's adjustment in divorced and married families. 14.Intervention in the parental alienation process: Intervention with the child, the alienated parent and the alienating parent.
5 5. Family processes and children's adjustment to divorce. 15. Mid term exam
6 6.The separation of marital and parental roles in the divorce process. 16.Final exam
