Course Objective

The aim of this course is to address the lack of educational and maintenance/repair infrastructure for conservatories and orchestras on external repair services by enabling students to acquire basic Maintenance and repair skills for their instruments.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Identify the basic structure and components of brass instruments and disassemble them safely.
2   Perform maintenance and repair on components such as valves, springs, screws, and felts/silicones of instruments.
3   Apply advanced techniques such as dent removal, soldering, and intonation (tuning) adjustment on instruments.
4   Independently maintain and repair their own instruments as well as school instruments.
5   Support the long-term usability of instruments by ensuring professional standards in maintenance and repair processes.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Introduction of the instrument, disassembly of the vent pipes and the instrument into parts, Learning the basic structure of the instrument and safe disassembly techniques.
2 Disassembly of the ventils (pistons) for inspection and cleaning/maintenance, Ventil cleaning and basic maintenance steps.
3 Disassembly of the instrument's main body and internal cleaning with hot water, and if necessary, grinding of the ventils, Internal cleaning procedures and grinding techniques.
4 Replacement of the threads/metal parts of the ventils, cleaning and lubrication, replacement of the main venti, Thread/metal replacement methods and lubrication.
5 Adjustment of the gap and height of the installed ventils, Precision adjustment techniques.
6 Replacement of rusted/stuck screws, Screw replacement procedures.
7 Replacement of the springs in the ventils, Spring replacement and assembly techniques.
8 Cork/silicone replacement and intonation (tuning) adjustment, Tuning and sealing adjustments.
9 The correction of dents in the instrument, Dent removal techniques.
10 Cleaning and Sanding of Broken Solder Joints, Cleaning and Sanding Applications
11 Learning Soldering, Practical Soldering Training
12 Assessment of Students' Competence in Dismantling and Assembling Their Instruments, Individual Performance Evaluation
13 Instrument Maintenance and Repair by Students: Group Project Application
14 General Evaluation and Feedback, Course Summary and Student Feedback

Students must come prepared with the necessary materials for each lesson.They must be careful to avoid damaging the instruments. There is a 70% attendance requirement for the course.
