Course Objective

This course explores the period in Turkish cinema known as Yeşilçam, spanning from the 1950s to the 1990s, within its socio-political and cultural contexts. It examines the relationship between Turkey s modernization process and film production, with a particular focus on the cultural implications of Turkish modernity. The films discussed in the course will be analyzed in relation to the social conditions of their time, through themes such as identity, migration, class, urbanization, and gender. Within this framework, the course aims to critically investigate how the narrative forms and aesthetic choices of the Yeşilçam era were shaped by the economic, political, and cultural dynamics of the period.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Informing the student about the art and history of cinema Turkish cinema in particular from the context of art-society relationship.
2   To have knowledge about the history of the society in which they live
3   Comprehending the need to establish relations between the history of cinema and the history and culture of Türkiye
4   It is expected that she will have a broad idea about the history of Turkish cinema.
