Course Objective

It is aimed to teach the importance of good oral health as an essential factor for performance in line with the growing popularity of recreational sports and the increasing demands on professional athletes, and to teach the management and treatment of injuries that may occur during sports competitions.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Explains the basic concepts and scope of sports dentistry.
2   Defines orofacial trauma.
3   Identifies common types of trauma.
4   Explains preventive methods to avoid sports-related dental injuries.
5   Applies screening protocols to assess oral and dental health in athletes.
6   Defines the purposes and types of mouthguards used in athletes.
7   Develops appropriate treatment plans following orofacial trauma.
8   Explains the special oral and dental needs of Paralympic athletes.
9   Evaluates advanced restorative dentistry applications in the context of athlete health.

Assessment Criteria

1. The student should be able to describe sports injuries and their treatments.
2. The student should have basic knowledge to perform dental scans of athletes.
3. The student should be able to define paralympic sports dentistry.
4. The student should be able to list the basic information about orofacial injuries.
5. The student should be able to list the methods of protection from sports injuries.
