Course Objective

The aim of this course is to enable dental students to acquire comprehensive knowledge of the structure, functions, and defense mechanisms of the oral mucosa; mucosal lesions; odontogenic and non-odontogenic cysts; benign and malignant tumors; and the oral manifestations of systemic, immunological, metabolic, and genetic diseases.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Defines the structure, functions, and defense mechanisms of the oral mucosa.
2   Explains the fundamental characteristics of vesiculobullous, ulcerative, and pigmented lesions of the oral mucosa.
3   Differentiates vesiculobullous, ulcerative, and pigmented lesions of the oral mucosa.
4   Compares the diagnostic criteria of connective tissue lesions with odontogenic and non-odontogenic cysts.
5   Defines the clinical features of premalignant and malignant lesions.
6   Explains the oral manifestations of hematologic diseases.
7   Describes the effects of immunologic diseases on the oral mucosa.
8   Explains the diagnostic and treatment principles of salivary gland disorders.
9   Defines the effects of physical and chemical injuries, as well as intoxications, on the oral mucosa.
