Course Objective

The primary aim of this course is to enable dental students to acquire comprehensive knowledge regarding the historical development of anesthesia, its fundamental pharmacological and anatomical principles, local anesthesia techniques, and potential complications. Furthermore, the course is designed to equip students with the ability to perform safe and effective anesthesia procedures within clinical practice and to competently manage emergency situations. By fostering the integration of theoretical knowledge with clinical application, the course ultimately seeks to strengthen students professional competence and preparedness for dental practice.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Explains the history, development, and role of local anesthesia in dentistry.
2   Defines the pain transmission pathways and the effects of local anesthetics on these pathways.
3   Explains the mechanism of action of local anesthetics, their pharmacokinetic properties, and the role of vasoconstrictors.
4   Relates the anatomy and functions of cranial nerves to intraoral anesthesia applications.
5   Applies intraoral local anesthesia techniques appropriately to both pediatric and adult patients.
6   Identifies potential complications related to local anesthesia and explains suitable management strategies.
7   Analyzes emergency situations encountered in dentistry.
8   Applies appropriate management for emergency situations encountered in dental practice.
9   Develops appropriate communication and management strategies for psychogenic reactions and difficult patients.
