Course Objective

The aim of the course is to provide undergraduate students with clinical observations of the Department of Periodontics and to teach them interventional and non-interventional applications in clinical practice, thus ensuring their clinical practice competence.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   1. Attending clinics before each lesson with the necessary educational materials for that lesson during class hours.
2   2. Wearing appropriate clothing to the clinic for infection control purposes
3   3. Compliance with sterilization/disinfection, cross-infection rules and regular and complete use of materials within the clinical setting.
4   4. Ability to communicate with the patient verbally and in writing, at a cognitive and cultural level.
5   5. Ability to obtain complete oral and written general and dental health history from patients
6   6. Ability to perform general intraoral and extraoral examinations of patients regarding dental complaints.
7   7. Ability to observe, assist and apply interventional and/or non-interventional clinical practices to patients.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 1. Ensuring infection control in the clinic, providing communication skills with the patient and ensuring that the patient can perform intraoral and extraoral examination steps.
2 2. Ability to apply the steps of diagnosing gum disease in the clinic, measuring the probing pocket depth, clinical attachment loss, and bleeding values on probing.
3 3. Observation of periodontal rare conditions, clinical application of prophylaxis, clinical application of occlusion control, clinical observation of furcation problems
4 4. Clinical observation of clinical application of being able to get support in tooth surface cleaning and root surface planing, making appropriate application movements, clinical application of patient motivation in tooth brushing technique, dental floss use, dental floss use and interdental brush use.
5 5. To ensure the maintenance of periodontal health after the completion of the patient's periodontal treatment and to direct patients who require periodontal surgery to further treatment.
