Course Objective

Evaluation, imaging and treatment planning of caries, periodontal disease, dental crowding, missing teeth and complaints caused by these in the oral cavity. Determination of systemic diseases and evaluation of oral complications, developmental anomalies of the oral region, odontogenic cysts, non-odontogenic cysts, odontogenic tumors, non-odontogenic tumors, vesiculobullous diseases, ulcerative lesions, white lesions, red lesions, pigmented lesions, verrucal-papillary lesions, connective tissue lesions, salivary gland diseases, lymphoid lesions, teaching the clinical evaluation of malignant lesions of the jaws.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Takes the patient s medical history regarding systemic diseases.
2   Applies clinical examination methods and records intraoral/extraoral findings.
3   Identifies radiological indications during clinical examination and selects the appropriate imaging method.
4   Applies intraoral and extraoral radiographic methods.
5   Combines radiographic and clinical findings to establish preliminary and differential diagnoses.
6   Proposes an appropriate treatment plan based on the diagnosis.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 The student conducts the necessary examinations and evaluations of a random patient under the supervision of a faculty member and assistants.
2 During the procedures, the faculty member and assistants make the necessary corrections and demonstrate them to the student.
3 The student diagnoses the patient and completes the treatment plan.
4 These procedures are re-evaluated by the faculty member and assistants.
5 The student is given any necessary warnings and information.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

1. The practical course will be given to the entire class in groups.
2. Each group will receive a total of four weeks (eighty hours) of practical training in the oral, dental and maxillofacial radiology clinic throughout the academic year.

Assessment Criteria

1. The student should know the panoramic, cephalometric, hand-wrist radiographic techniques and be able to apply the panoramic technique.

2. The student should know and be able to diagnose the pathologies localized in the jaw bones.

3. The student should know and be able to diagnose the oral soft tissue pathologies.

4. The student should be able to define and diagnose the paranasal sinus pathologies and soft tissue calcifications.

5. The student should be able to define advanced imaging techniques.
