Course Objective

This course aims to introduce the special oral and dental health needs of children and individuals with disabilities, and to provide students with knowledge and skills in preventive, therapeutic, and educational approaches for these individuals.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   The student defines disabled patients and their classification.
2   The student explains the oral and dental health problems and general characteristics of children with disabilities.
3   The student defines dental approach techniques for children with disabilities.
4   The student explains the oral and dental health education to be provided to the parents and teachers of children with disabilities.
5   The student interprets dental approaches for children with medical disabilities.
6   The student explains preventive oral health practices in individuals with disabilities.

7 Psychomotor impairments (Cerebral Palsy) and dental management
8 Clinical approach to children with intellectual disabilities: Clinical applications and case management
9 Sedation and general anesthesia applications in children with disabilities
10 Medical history, dental history, diagnosis, and treatment planning in individuals with disabilities
11 Oral health practices in individuals with disabilities
12 Recommendations for treatment approaches in individuals with disabilities
13 General anesthesia and dental treatments for individuals with disabilities

Assessment Criteria

The course grade is calculated by taking 40% of the average of two midterm exams and 60% of the final exam. A resit exam is administered for unsuccessful students.
