Course Objective

It is aimed to teach ergonomic work at the chairside in preclinical training, to explain and demonstrate tooth brushing, dental floss, and interdental cleaning to patients, to teach and practice the use of periodontal hand instruments on phantom models, to demonstrate and have students practice taking indices in periodontal tissues, to teach sharpening of periodontal instruments, and to teach polishing of teeth to remove tooth surface stains.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   The dentist applies the principles of ergonomic working.
2   The dentist applies explaining the use of oral hygiene motivation tools to the patient.
3   Applies taking indices for the diagnosis of periodontal diseases.
4   Applies the use of supra- and subgingival hand instruments.
5   Applies the procedure of sharpening periodontal curettes.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

Assessment Criteria

Use of Gracey 5/6, 11/12, and 13/14 curettes, sickle scaler (H6/7), sharpening of instruments, toothbrushing on the model prepared with natural teeth, and use of interdental cleaning tools (dental floss, interdental brush).
40% of the annual practical grade
60% from the average of preclinical evaluation forms is taken.
