Course Objective

It is aimed to teach the etiological factors and treatments that play a role in the onset and progression of periodontal diseases, as well as the causes, pathogenesis, and epidemiology of periodontal diseases. It is also aimed to teach the clinical and radiological findings of gingivitis and periodontitis, diagnostic methods, clinical examination of periodontal tissues, techniques, instruments and devices used in clinical and radiological periodontal examination, index systems, and the evaluation of periodontal prognosis.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Understands the mechanisms in the pathogenesis of periodontal diseases.
2   Understands the diagnostic criteria of periodontal diseases.
3   Understands how to classify gingival diseases and distinguish different gingival diseases.
4   Understands how to classify periodontitis and distinguish different types of periodontitis.
5   Understands the steps of clinical periodontal examination.
6   Understands how to determine prognosis according to periodontal examination findings.
7   Applies how to determine prognosis according to periodontal examination findings.
8   Understands the steps of periodontal treatment in order.
9   Understands what needs to be done in non-surgical periodontal treatment in order.
10   Applies what needs to be done in non-surgical periodontal treatment in order.
11   Understands how to identify traumatic occlusion.
12   Understands which medications should be used and when.

Assessment Criteria

1. The student should be able to distinguish between healthy periodontal tissues and unhealthy periodontal tissues.
2. The student should be able to define the concepts of pocket and attachment, which are fundamental in the diagnosis, classification, treatment planning and patient follow-up of periodontal diseases.
3. The student should be able to define local and systemic etiological factors that play a role in the emergence and progression of periodontal diseases,
4. The student should be able to classify periodontal diseases, and make a differential definition of clinical conditions as a result of examining the diseases in question.
