Course Objective

The anatomy of periodontal tissues consisting of gingiva, periodontal ligament, cementum and alveolar bone, the concepts of pocket and attachment, and the formation of dental plaque are aimed to be taught in detail.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Recognizes the structure and functions of gingiva, periodontal ligament, cementum, and alveolar bone.
2   Recognizes the difference between healthy and unhealthy periodontal tissues.
3   Recognizes the structure and functions of saliva.
4   Recognizes xerostomia, its causes and consequences.
5   Recognizes the dental plaque biofilm, its importance, types, stages of formation, and the factors influencing its formation.
6   Recognizes the structure, types, formation processes, and theories of calculus formation.
7   Recognizes the concepts of periodontal pocket and attachment.
8   Recognizes how periodontal pocket and attachment are measured.

Assessment Criteria

1. Defines the structure of the gingival, periodontal ligament, cementum and alveolar bone and lists its functions.
tells the difference between unhealthy periodontal tissues.
2. Defines the structure of saliva, counts its functions, defines dry mouth, counts its causes and consequences.
3. Defines dental plaque biofilm, explains its importance, counts its types, formation stages and effective factors in formation.
