Course Objective

The aim of this course is to explore cultural and musical aspects of Turkish popular music from the historical perspective.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1	Students who successfully complete this course should be able to:
2	discuss the matrix of popular culture in the context of Turkish case from the historical perspective, and recognize the relationship between popular music practices and other aspects of popular culture in Türkiye
3	explain the socio/cultural dinamics of popular music practices ranging from the Ottoman state to the Republic of Türkiye
4	determine that Kanto, which is the first popular genre before the Republic, has had a strong relationship with the Tuluat (traditional Turkish theater based on the improvisation) theater and Comedia dell arte.
5	recognize the effects on Turkish popular music life of the writing and printing of staff-notation and the development of sound recording technology in the context of software and hardware.
6	have information about Tango which is the first popular genre of thi Republican period, and discuss the important role of Tango in the political and social life of Türkiye.
7	recognize the symbiotic relationship between radio and cinema as monopolistic media and popular music in the context of radio broadcasting and film industry in Türkiye
