Offered By

Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences

Level of Course Unit

Third Cycle Programmes (Doctorate Degree)

Course Coordinator

PROFESSOR DOCTOR TOLGA GÖNENÇ

Offered to

GEOPHYSICAL ENGINEERING

Course Objective

Basic understanding of the earth and its behavior as well oceans and general knowlwdge of about their dynamics. This course aims to provide an introduction to the basic concepts about the earth and the oceans and their geophysical anomalies (Gravity; Magnetics; Paleomagnetism; Heat Flow; Seismology) related with these structures. The structure and tectonics of Turkey as well as the surrounding regions (Eastern Mediterranean, Aegean and Black Sea) shall be evaluated in the context of the plate tectonic dynamics.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to define the basic structure of the earth (crust, mantle and core)
2   To be able to understand the basic concepts of the earth dynamics (oceans and continents)
3   To be able to define mid-ocean ridges, subduction zones and collision zones
4   To be able to utilize the geophysical anomalies of seismology, heat flow, topogeodesy, gravity and magnetic for the understanding of the plate tectonics
5   To be able to investigate the tectonics of Turkey and the surrounding areas in the context of plate tectonics
6   To be able to discuss the results and outcomes of the plate tectonics with respect to geohazard aspects
