Course Objective

This course aims to provide the student with a comprehensive view of retailing and an application of marketing concepts in a practical retail managerial environment. Current multi-channel retail strategies among bricks-and-mortar and web-based firms will be analyzed.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To demonstrate an understanding of the crucial and growing role played by retailers in the marketing environment.
2   Recognize retail marketing strategies of the companies with the purpose of understanding the complexities of retailing.
3   Work effectively as part of a team participating and interacting in the group in a productive manner for him/herself and for the group as a whole.
4   Improve oral and written communication skills through class discussions and presentations.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

1. Final Exam
Students will be assessed on their knowledge of concepts and theories through a essay-type written exam.
2. Assignments (2 X 25 points)
Students will do an observation in a real marketing environment about topics covered in class and prepare a written report. They are expected to share their observation with their class-mates through oral presentations.

Assessment Criteria

Late submissions of reports will not be graded.

Group homework 1

1) Choose one topic of your interest related to retailing: Make a comprehensive presentation related to the topic you have chosen. Use at least 2 reference books and 10 articles and related internet sites. (40 points).

2) Real-Life Examples: Provide at least 3 real-life examples related to your chosen topic. (30 points).

3) Professional Presentation: During your presentation, it is expected to make a professional presentation (maintain eye contact, do not read, organize slide structure, and have comprehensive knowledge of the subject) (30 points).

Each three aspects will be graded by using the following rubric:

Group homework 2

1) General Information about Retailer: General information and Positioning of the retailer (10 points).
2) Trade Area Analysis and Site Selection: Explain the trade areas and site selection strategies of the retailer (10 points).
3) Merchandise Plans: Explain general Merchandising strategies used by the retailer (10 points).
4) Retail image: Explain the retailer image intended by the retailer and explain how they accomplished that image (20 points).
5) Pricing in retailing: Explain the pricing strategies of the retailer (15 points).
6) Promotion in retailing: Explain the promotion strategies of the retailer (15 points).
7) Building and sustaining relationships: Explain how the retailer intends to build relationships with its customers (10 points).
8) Professional Presentation: During your presentation, it is expected to make a professional presentation (maintain eye contact, do not read, organize slide structure, and have comprehensive knowledge of the subject) (10 points).
