Course Objective

This course aims to outline the history of world cinema from its beginning to the 2000s.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to explain the technical developments until the invention of the cinematograph,
2   To be able to explain the basic features of the silent cinema period and the basic features of the first narratives,
3   To be able to explain D. W. Griffith's contributions to cinema,
4   Ability to explain comedy films within the framework of Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd Mack Sennet and Charlie Chaplin
5   To be able to explain the intellectual foundations and leading names of the surrealism movement in cinema,
6   To be able to explain the basic features of French Poetic Realism and the leading directors,
7   To be able to explain the basic features of German Expressionist cinema and the historical and social developments that brought it about,
8   The contributions of the Soviet Montage School to cinema, the montage understanding of its pioneers, and the historical and social dynamics that brought the school into being,
9   To be able to explain the foundations of the Italian Neorealism movement, its leading directors and the dynamics that brought this movement to light,
10   To be able to explain the intellectual foundations of the French New Wave movement, the leading directors and the basic features of their films,
11   To be able to explain the Dogma 95 movement and the cinema concepts of its leading directors.
