General Description

History

Department of Surgical Nursing was established at September 26, 1994 as a department of Institute of Health Science by approval of the Senate. Our academic staff are consist ed of members of Department of Surgical Nursing of the Nursing Faculty and members of the Faculty of Medicine Department of General Surgery. Surgical Nursing PhD program has been started education at 2008 by approval of The Council of Higher Education. Program duration is 4 years (2 year is course, 2 year is thesis study. The language of program is Turkish.

Specific Admission Requirements

Second Cycle Degree in the same or in related disciplines. Acceptable score on ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam) or Equivalent GRE, GMAT score. Acceptable score on Language Proficiency Tests. Acceptable weighted score based on the first or second cycle (with thesis) cumulative grade point average (GPA) and ALES score. However, ALES requirement is waived for the graduates of doctorate /arts proficiency/medical residency/ dental residency/ veterinary residency/ pharmaceutical residency programs as well as for the admissions to the graduate programs offered by the Conservatory and the departments of Fine Arts Faculty, where students are admitted only by the Artistic Aptitude Test. Final admission is based on the evaluation of the related academic unit committee. International student admission requirements are decided by the Graduate School Executive Committee.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

A successful student who has completed at least one semester at any postgraduate programme may be admitted to an institute at the University by lateral transfer. Requirements for admission of students by lateral transfer are determined by the Board of Directors of the Institute.Students who have matriculated after they have successfully passed the postgraduate entrance exam may be exempted from the courses they have already taken in other institutes upon the proposal of the relevant department and the approval of the Board of Directors of the Institute. However, the total credits of the exempted courses cannot exceed 1/3 of the credits required to finish the relevant programme.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Third Cycle (Doctorate Degree) Program is comprised of courses, (at least 78 ECTS), field study (12 ECTS) and thesis (120 ECTS), in total 240 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB / S / TP grades.

Profile of the Programme

Surgical Nursing PhD program has been started education at 2005. The oblectives of this programme are contribute of improving to surgical nursing by doing original researches for developing new idea, methods and practices; to follow and use evidence based practices; and to decide according to take into consideration of patients preferences. Program contains Compulsory Course of Institute (4 national credits), compulsory course of Surgical Nursing department and and elective courses in different Surgical Nursing fields. Students may take courses from different programs and university.

1   Students develop, deepen the current and advanced information in the field of surgical nursing based on postgraduate competencies to the level of expertise with original ideas and/or researches and reach to original definitions that will bring innovations to the field of surgical diseases nursing.
2   They possess information on nursing theories and models
3   They possess advanced research information
4   They evaluate and use the new information in the field of surgical diseases nursing systematically.
5   They conduct researches by using the models and theories to solve the problems in the field of nursing care.
6   They use the relevant theories and models in the nursing care of patients requiring surgical intervention
7   They follow and use the innovations in the preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative patient care.
8   They use their information on the basic concepts of surgical diseases nursing in the nursing care of the diseases requiring surgical intervention
9   They display their critical thinking, decision-taking and leadership characteristics in the field of nursing.
10   They follow the evidence-based practices and they can take clinic decisions by evaluating the evidences in the light of their expertise knowledges and the patient preferences
11   They contribute to the progress of their fields by independently conducting an original research which develops a new thought, method, design and/or practice in the field of surgical diseases nursing or applies a known thought, method, design and/or practice to another field.
12   They extend the borders of their field by publishing at least one scientific article related to the health in national and/or international refereed journals
13   They can maintain the life long learning.
14   They can provide consultancy.
15   They assume effective roles in the team works
16   They have the competence of using the legal responsibilities in the working place
17   They have a foreign language of at least C1 General Level of European Language Portfolio and establish advanced levels of written, oral and visual communication
18   They contribute to the solution of social, scientific, cultural and ethic problems encountered in the field of health and promote the development of these values.
19   They use the current developments and information related to the health sector for the benefit of the society in line with individual, family and country realities and national values.

Graduates of this program can work as a nurse specialist in the field of Surgical Nursing.

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

Every student must register to total of 30 ECTS. 150 out of 240 ECTS must be thesis studies. Throughout PhD study, each student must collect 90 ECTS (including 12 ECTS of Specialty Area course) in 3 semesters. During course period of PhD study, every student should enroll to at least 20 ECTS of common elective courses (such as, Research culture, research methods and transferrable skills) and at least 20 ECTS more from discipline based and laboratory skill courses. Also, student may enroll to a common elective, discipline based and laboratory skill courses in a different institute or university to complete 20 ECTS. Every student must register to Thesis related reseach topic I in first semester and Thesis related reseach topic II in second semester. Furthermore, during course period , each student should attend to a Ethics course or training.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Second Cycle (Master's Degree) diploma. Minimum GPA 80/100 or 3/4, minimum score of 60 from the nation-wide Academic Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) in the related fields, minimum score of 60 from the Foreign Language Exams (UDS/KPDS) or the equivalent exams scores obtained fromTOEFL/IELTS/etc, and being successful at the science examination of the Institute in the related fields (minimum score of 70)
