Course Objective

The aim of this course is to provide students the ways of identifying, formulating, solving and analyzing the geometry-motion relation in mechanical systems.

1 Introduction to mechanisms.
2 Characteristics of mechanism links and kinematic pairs.
3 Kinematic diagrams. Kinematic chains.
4 Degrees of freedom of mechanisms. Constrained motion.
5 Position analysis of mechanisms.
6 Velocity analysis of mechanisms by using analytical method.
7 Velocity analysis of mechanisms by using graphical method.
8 Accelaration analysis of mechanisms by using analytical method.
9 Accelaration analysis of mechanisms by using analytical method.
10 Acceleration analysis of mechanisms by using graphical method.
11 Acceleration analysis of mechanisms by using graphical method.
12 Mid-term exam.
13 Kinematic analysis of gear trains.
14 Kinematic analysis of cam mechanisms and principles of cam design.

Assessment Criteria

Lectures include whole of the learning outcomes.

Classification, explanation of motion, formation of models; solution of position, velocity and acceleration of mechanisms for a specific configuration are evaluated in mid-term exam.

In final exam, in addition to the subjects of mid-term exam, kinematic analysis of gear trains and cam mechanisms are asked.
