Course Objective

The main objective of this course is to develop in the Mechanical Engineering students the ability to analyze a given mechanics problem in a simple and logical manner and to apply its solution a few fundamental and well-understood principles.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Ability to discuss stresses resulting from general loading
2   Ability to use transformation of stress and strain relationships
3   Ability to calculate stresses, applied loads, etc., in a machine element by using strain gage measurements
4   Ability to design mechanical systems
5   Ability to solve mechanics problems by energy methods

1 Unsymmetric bending.
2 General case of eccentric axial loading, Bending of curved members.
3 Stresses under combined loading, Transformation of plane stress.
4 Principal stresses and maximum shearing stress, Mohr s circle for plane stress.
5 Yield criteria for ductile materials.
6 Fracture criteria for brittle materials, Stresses in thin-walled pressure vessels.
7 1st mid-term exam.
8 Transformation of plane strain, Mohr s circle for plane strain, Measurements of plane strain, Strain rosette.
9 Design of transmission shafts subjected to bending and torsion moments.
10 Deflection of a beam under transverse loading by integration method, Equation of the elastic curve, Statically indeterminate beams, Method of superposition.
11 Columns, Stability of structures, Euler's formula.
12 2nd mid-term exam.
13 Energy methods, Design for impact loads, Work and energy under a single load.
14 Castiglione's theorem, Deflections by Castiglione's theorem.
