Course Objective

Within the framework of overall mining engineering; the concepts and terms, mostly related to mining, and to geology, metallurgy and basic engineering will be taught and the students will be acknowledged about these terms at fundamental level.

1   To be able to memorize and apply English grammar structures thoroughly
2   To be able to describe the role of science and engineering in daily life
3   To be able to explain the English translation of mining terminology
4   To be able to solve the relationship between mining engineering and other geosciences
5   To be able to prepare a scientific report in English about mining engineering and geosciences
6   To be able to develop themselves in English pronounciation and presentation

Course Contents

1 Introduction with the students, determination of the English level of the class with simple exercises and examples
2 Introductory mining engineering, history of mining and its contribution to the civilization in English
3 Teaching use of minerals in our daily life in English
4 English translations and definitions of mine, mining and mining engineering terms
5 English translations and definitions of mineral, rock, ore, gangue and waste rock.
6 Definition of mining operations such prospecting, development, exploitation stages in English
7 Profound explanation of open pit mining technique in English
8 Explanation of various underground methods with simple figures and layouts in English
9 Mid-Term Exam
10 Explanation of mine closure and reclamation stages in English
11 Definition of unit mining operations and mineral economics terminology in English
12 Teaching English translations of general geology concepts such as mantle-crust-core
13 Explanation of plate movements on earth and the theory of plate tectonics in English
14 Presentation and discussion of scientic reports that are prepared by the students in English
