Course Objective

To teach what local anesthetic agents are used for local anesthesia in dentistry, their properties, contents, duration of action, how much they should be used for anesthesia and their commercial forms. Explaining the signs and symptoms of systemic emergencies that may be encountered in the clinic, ways of prevention and treatments. To give information to dentistry students about local anesthesia techniques, when and in which situations they should apply to their patients.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Students can choose the appropriate local anesthetic solution for the patient with the local anesthesia they will perform and know the amount they need to use.
2   When choosing the appropriate local anesthetic solution for the patient, he/she knows the amount of vasoconstrictor substance in that solution and the amount of application they should use.
3   Learns topical anesthesia, infiltration anesthesia, local anesthesia, regional anesthesia techniques and their complications.
4   Learns infiltration anesthesia techniques and complications.
5   Students can decide whether sedation is required for children or mentally retarded patients who come to them while they are performing their professional life in the future.

Assessment Criteria

The student should be able to correctly select the appropriate local anesthetic solution for the patient with the local anesthesia to be performed and define the amount they should use.
When choosing the appropriate local anesthetic solution for the patient, they should be able to define the amount of vasoconstrictor substance in that solution and the amount of application they should use.
Should be able to define all of the techniques of topical anesthesia, infiltration anesthesia, local anesthesia, regional anesthesia and their complications.
Define infiltration anesthesia techniques and complications.
The student should be able to decide whether sedation is required for children or mentally retarded patients.
