Course Objective

1- To improve knowledge and skills of students on current techniques in cellular biology
2- To improve knowledge and skills of students on current techniques on protein levels, locations and function of proteins in eukaryotic cells

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Know fundamentals of eukaryotic cells, tissues, and biological behaviors of cells in culture conditions
2   Know basic principles of cell separation techniques
3   Recognize intracellular structures of eukaryotic cells
4   Monitor cells and intracellular organelles in different levels by microscopic techniques
5   Conduct cell proliferation, differentiation, death and senescence assays and analysis related data in cultured cells
6   Perform end point and real time adhesion and motility assays,
7   Interpret and analyze of the related data
8   Know basic methods in protein analysis techniques
9   Demonstrate a working knowledge and technical skills on protein extraction and isolation techniques
10   Demonstrate a working knowledge and technical skills on protein-protein interaction methods
11   Demonstrate a working knowledge and technical skills on cellular localization analysis methods of proteins
12   Demonstrate a working knowledge and technical skills on gene expression analysis by immunostaining and western blotting
13   Know and practice the bioinformatics tools for protein sequence, structure and function analysis
14   Know and practice the bioinformatics tools for predicting protein function using bioinformatics tools

1 Basic cell culture methods (seeding, counting, cryopreservation, reviving)
2 Microscopy (light, DIG, Fluorescence, Phase contrast, Confocal, Electron)
3 Fractionation of cellular organelles
4 Viability, proliferation, senescence and apoptosis analysis
5 Adhesion, motility, invasion analysis
6 Cell sorting (FACS, magnetic separation)
7 Transfection
8 Gene expression analysis (Reporter Assays, Immunoblot, Immunostaining)
9 Protein isolation from cells, determining quantity and localization
10 Protein-protein interactions (Co-IP, pull-down assays, FRET, PLA)
11 Protein-protein interactions (Co-IP, pull-down assays, FRET, PLA)
12 Proximity ligation assay, in silico methods.
13 Proteomics
14 in silico analysis
15 Functional and quantitative analysis (Mass-spect., SILAC)
