Course Objective

Students will understand the basic concepts and relationships among these concepts, like scientific method, science, variable and measurement. Valid and reliable measurement / data collection and sampling techniques in researches will be covered in the course. Connected with, students will identify the key factors in reliable and valid measurements and researches. Students will formulate research problems and sub-problems. Students will get acquainted with basic statistical techniques mostly used in hypothesis testing and will be able to select proper techniques for the related hypotheses and learn ethics principles in scientific reseach

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Science and scientific method.The origin of scientific thought, definition of science and scientific method. The steps of scientific method.Scientific researches the features of scientific researches. The characteristics and of functions of science. Scientific attitude and related behavioral characteristics.
2 Educational measurement and evaluation: Variables and scales. Continuous and discrete variables. Dependent and independent variables. Nominal, ordinal, interval and ratio scales. Permissible arithmetic operations for each scale. Statistical techniques which are appropriate for each scale. Errors in measurements
3 Data collection. The measurement means used in education. Questionnaires, scales, achievement tests other measurement ways.
4 Instrumentation: Validity and reliability of measurement. Calculation of reliability and validity coefficient of attitude scales and achievement tests. Context validity, criterion validity, predictive validity.
5 Problem identification and hypothesis formation. Theoretical construct of the research. Statement of problem Statement of sub-problems Purpose of the research Limitations Basic assumptions Definitions of the basic terms

12 Findings and interperations: Examples of findings and interpretations taking into consideration previous literature. Guidelines for writing the results. Tabulations of the findings. Table titles.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

The homeworks will be assessed by directly adding to the term work scores in semester. The exam dates will be indicated in the lesson plan. As the exam dates become definite, the previously announced dates may change.

Assessment Criteria

In-class participation and written homework, end-of-semester final homework and short report presentation.

1. It is obligated to continue to at least 70% of lessons .
2. Behaviours such as copying in exams, clashing and making intials in the publications will be concluded with the opening of a disciplinary investigation.
3. The instructor has right to make quizzes. The scores obtained from quizzes will be directly added to exam scores.
