General Description

History

Architectural education in the city of Izmir has first been offered in 1963 by Aegean Engineering and Architectural Private School, which has been founded at Buca, Izmir. Dokuz Eylul University Faculty of Architecture has then been established in 1992, on the 3rd of July. However, the foundation of the Faculty as party of Faculty of Engineering and Architecture Alsancak dates earlier, to the year 1971. The Faculty has been moved to its new building in Buca, Tınaztepe, Kaynaklar Campus in 2004.
Since the beginning of undergraduate architectural education with 12 students in 1972, the Faculty has gone through a number of new developments that have various legal and institutional reflections. One of such is the start of undergraduate education in urban planning with the foundation of the Department of City and Regional Planning in 1979. In time, the two Departments of Architecture and City Planning has taken a prominent place in the establishment of different institutional bodies as part of first the Aegean University Engineering Sciences, Academy of Engineering and Architecture (1971), secondly Aegean University Faculty of Fine Arts (1975), then Dokuz Eylul University Faculty of Engineering and Architecture (1982), and finally Dokuz Eylul University Faculty of Architecture (1992).

Specific Admission Requirements

First Cycle (Bachelor's Degree) diploma; minimum score of 55 from the National Central Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) in the related field; a minimum score of 65 from the graduate school entrance exam; a minimum score of 60 from the nation-wide Foreign Language Exam ( YDS ) or equivalent score from an exam accredited by YÖK or a minimum score of 70 from DEU School of Foreign Languages English Proficiency Test.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students may be accepted for graduate transfer with the approval of the Department Directorate and decision of the Board of Directors of the Graduate School in case the student fulfills the graduate transfer regulations decided by the General Council of the Graduate School. Previously taken courses at another graduate programme with a successful grade may be recognized by the related programmes with the written request of the students including course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the Department Directorates and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing Exchange students may have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective by the decision of the Board of Directors.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

1 semester compulsory Urban Conservation Planning Scientific Preparatory Training (obligatory to achieve the ones determined according to the license field completed from the Scientific Preparation courses), 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 120 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

The cities occupy a crucial role in daily living practices as areas where economical relations are established and organized on the one hand, and where social culture is being produced on the other. While economical profitability is dependent upon spatial fluidity, functionality and facilities offered by the cities, cultural structure, which is the inevitable imperative for social re-production, is realized through those experiences attained over urban space. In this respect, to the extent that cities can provide for facilities as places of economical and social communication, sound and successful processes can be attained along the line of development extending from the individual to the society. Searches for reaching livable environments undoubtedly do not interfere with organization of merely the built environment. The naturality of the relations between the natural and urban environments bears important connections with the harmony between man and nature.
The Department of City and Regional Planning deals with the city as the re-production area social and economical processes and the organization of urban spaces. This area of interest comprises the relations between nature and built environments. In national, regional, urban and sub-urban regions, planning should be able to create not only such spatial organizations that can maximize economical profitability, but also such spatial opportunities where the society can express and re-produce its cultural identity.

6	Ability to recognise and understand different perspectives of the different specialization areas in historic environment conservation planning by working together.
7	Ability to recognize and understand the different cultural structures, and to comprehend the relation between the cultural structure and the practice of production of space.
8	Ability to understand and examine the relation between the legal and administrative structures and the applications in historic environment conservation.
9	Ability to analyze and identify the specific spatial and socio-economic requirements of historic environments and to put forward conservational strategies and proposals that satisfy these requirements.
10	Ability to follow the national and international academic literature on historic environment conservation and gain the academic expressions by means of publications, presentations, discussions, etc.
11	Ability to comprehend and interpret the conservation experiences of different countries within their spatial, social, cultural and economic contexts.
12	Ability to develop the appropriate language and graphical expressions for the conservation planning process of the historic environments.
13	Ability to interpret and use the current/contemporary knowledge for problem solving in conservation areas.
14	Ability to comprehend the needs of conservation areas during the processes and develop legal, administrative and methodological proposals for their fulfilment.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Those who graduated from the program had job opportunities in private planning offices and municipalities that work on urban conservation planning. Graduates will be able to find jobs in the public sector (ministries and provincial institutions, municipalities) and private sector (private offices, appraisal companies, etc.).

Graduation Requirements

Second Cycle (Master's Degree) Programme with thesis is comprised of courses (at least 81 ECTS), a seminar (3 ECTS), M. Sc. Research (6 ECTS) and M. Sc. Thesis (30 ECTS), in total 120 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50 / 4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB / S / TP grades.
