General Description

History

The graduate program in Physics department, establised at 1997 in Dokuz Eylül University organization has been in progress and graduate the M.S. students since 1998-1999 academic year. The service of our department to graduate education is enhanced with beginning of Ph.D. program at 2003-2004 education year.
General Physics, High Energy and Plasma Physics, Atomic and Molecular Physics, Nuclear Physics and Solid State Physics are major branches of the Department. 3 Professors, 6 Assoc. Prof.Dr., 4 Assist. Prof. Dr., 2 Instructors and 12 Assistants are currently working in the department. The courses offered in Physics program especially emphasize the fundamentals of Physics and then advanced Physics considering all these major subjects. The research laboratories of the department are equipped with the research equipments and facilities needed to do scientific research with the support of Scientific Research Projects Fund of Dokuz Eylül University and TUBITAK.

Specific Admission Requirements

Second Cycle (Master's Degree) diploma; minimum 80/100 or 3/4 Cumulative Grade Point Average, minimum score of 60 from the National Central Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) in the related field; a minimum score of 70 from the graduate school entrance exam; a minimum score of 60 from the nation-wide Foreign Language Exam ( YDS ) or equivalent score from an exam accredited by YÖK.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students may be accepted for graduate transfer with the approval of the Department Directorate and decision of the Board of Directors of the Graduate School in case the student fulfills the graduate transfer regulations decided by the General Council of the Graduate School. Previously taken courses at another graduate programme with a successful grade may be recognized by the related programmes with the written request of the students including course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the Department Directorates and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing Exchange students may have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective by the decision of the Board of Directors.

4 years, 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 240 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

The Department of Physics offers programs leading to M.Sc. degrees and Ph. D. in Physics. The principal goal of the graduate program in our department is to provide students with strong background in fundamental areas of theoretical and applied physics and to prepare them for careers in industry or in academic institutions.
The objectives of the program are:
- to educate and train graduate students in a wide range of topics in theoretical and applied physics by developing a thorough understanding of the laws of physics and their applications
- to prepare the student to carry out original and independent research in physics and provide training for professional work in several areas of applied physics
- to give an hands-on experience with current research techniques employed in physics
- to develop the skills to trace the scientific and technological developments in a specific sub-discipline of physics
- to improve the ability to communicate scientific results effectively, both verbally and in writing
- to develop the conscience to gain professional and ethical responsibility
They will be highly proficient at problem solving and will gain ability to solve challenges by thinking creatively. A physics degree will also give a grounding in advanced mathematics. The practical skills gained through planning experiments will also be appreciated by recruiters.
There are several laboratories and facilities served for graduate studies at the department of Physics at Dokuz Eylül University. Research laboratories consist of superconductivity, crystallography and nuclear physics laboratories. M.S. and Ph.D. students can make investigational and educational activities there and undergraduate students can implement the projects as well. Following the laboratory work, the students develop their knowledge and skills about superconducting technologies, X-ray spectroscopy, environmental radioactivity, gamma spectroscopy, Radon measurement etc.. Additionally, a high-performance super computer system capable of parallel computations exist in the department. Otherwise, a modern seminar room available for up to nearly 15 people in the department, equipped with an overhead projector, a slide projector and computer systems is open to undergraduate and graduate students presentations including computer simulated displays.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

This degree enables the holder to exercise the profession in the public or private sector. There are a number of physics-based careers medical physicist, research scientist, scientific laboratory technician, radiation protection adviser, profession in secondary education. Physics graduates also find employment in academic institutions, and government research organisations as well as industries such as, engineering, manufacturing, oil and gas, and telecommunications.
The new accepted form of the graduate program of Physics department of Faculty of Sciences at Dokuz Eylül University is predicted to be more efficient, since the idea that this design will find both domestic and abroad employment opportunities.

MSc physicist can work in broad industrial areas as a medical physicist, research scientist, scientific laboratory technician, radiation protection adviser, etc. MSc physicist at the same time participates in research groups at universities and research institutes. Furthermore, they can be employed as a physics teacher at private or state schools provided that they have a Pedagogical Formation (pedagojik formasyon) Certificate.

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

In addition to the compulsory courses of the programme, students register to elective courses appropriate for their thesis topic, on the consent of their supervisor. If necessary, on the consent of their supervisor, they can also register to courses from other programmes (from DEU or other universities). It is obligatory to register MAT 5101 and MAT 5102 and PHY 5125 with approval of the supervisor. In the case of one of these courses taken during the M.Sc. education, these are not obligatory. The registration must be noticed to the Institute during course registration period by the supervisor. In order to graduate from the doctorate program 12 credit hours must be completed from obligatory courses.

Graduation Requirements

Third Cycle (Doctor of Philosophy) Programme is comprised of courses (at least 67 ECTS),Ph.D.Seminar (5 ECTS), Ph. D. Research (18 ECTS) / Ph. D. Thesis (150 ECTS) courses, thesis proposal, doctoral qualifying examination and thesis examination with a total credit of 240 ECTS. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50 / 4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB / S / TP grades.
