The department of Chemistry Education has offered Philosophy of Doctorate Degree since 2002.

The PhD Degree in Chemistry Education is awarded to the graduates who successfully fullfilled all programme courses and who defend their thesis in front of an academic jury.

Specific Admission Requirements

Candidates for admission to the Ph.D. Programs should
-Have a master's degree in a relevant discipline.
-Have a grade point average of at least 80 out of 100, at least 3.00 out of 4.00 in graduate degree
-Have at least 60 points from the score type of the program he / she applied in the Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) by ÖSYM.
-Have at least 60 out of 100 points in one of the exams accepted by YÖK or equivalent score in one of equivalent international language exams.
- In foreign language programs, the foreign language requirement must be different from the language of the foreign language program. In case the language of the program is the native language of the candidate, foreign language must be different.

For candidates who apply for Ph.D. programs;
Interview score will be calculated out of written and oral assessment scores for all the applicants taking written and oral exams.
Interview score will contain 60% of the written assessment score and 40% of the oral assessment score.
Interview Score = 60% Written Assessment Score + 40% Oral Assessment Score
Candidates with an interview score of 70 or higher are considered to be successful and an evaluation score containing ALES score, Graduation score and interview score will be calculated for these candidates.
Evaluation score will contain 50% of the ALES score, 25% of the graduation score and 25% of the interview score.
Evaluation Score =% 50 ALES +% 25 Graduation Score +% 25 Interview Score
(Graduation score will be processed out of 100 points.)
Candidates are placed in the programs they apply according to their evaluation scores. Applicants who have the highest score will have the right to enroll in the programs which have free quota. (Taking into account their priority choice they had made). Same amount of reserved candidates will be announced. Applicants who have the right to enroll must register between the dates announced. Free quotas will be used by the reserved candidates.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Successful students who have completed at least one semester in the graduate program of another institute within the university or another higher education institution may apply for a transfer in the announced dates if the quota is determined by the Board of Directors. The conditions for admission of the transfer are determined by the institute board.

Exemption requests of students for the courses taken at graduate program of another department/university with a successful grade are evaluated by the Administrative Board of the Institute by the recommendation of the head of the departments according to the provisions of Dokuz Eylül University Exemption and Adaptation Directives.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

PhD program consists of at least seven courses, thesis proposal, field of expertise, proficiency exam, seminar and thesis work, not less than at least 21 local credits.
The student workload for a semester is 30 ECTS, and the total workload to complete the PhD program is 240 ECTS.
In addition to midterm and final exams, learning activities such as reports, assignments, quizzes, seminar presentations and project studies can be used in the performance evaluation of the student during the semester. In order for the student to be successful in this course, the grade must be at least 75 out of 100 (at least 2.50 out of 4.00). Seminar, thesis work and specialization courses are evaluated as successful / unsuccessful.

Profile of the Programme

Chemistry Education doctoral program, aware of contemporary approaches to assessment, in line with technological advances can improve our teaching activities, teaching processes can use different teaching methods and strategies, aims to educate qualified individuals able to follow the work done in the field.
The program is designed to promote personal and professional growth for both education and chemistry fields. The language of instruction is Turkish.
There are 9 foreign language (25%) lessons in the program.

9   Analyze the social relations in occupational and professional environments and the norms shaping these relations from a critical perspective
10   Be able to establish scientific communication at an effective level by utilizing the knowledge and experiences gained in the field
11   Use a foreign language to follow the publications, to communicate and to write scientific treatises
12   Take responsibility to inform the society about issues related to the field
13   Execute field studies in accordance with ethical values
14   Take responsibility to solve a problem requiring proficiency in chemistry education and demonstrate leadership when necessary

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

The related doctorate degree provides the rights and privileges to practice the profession.
The PhD graduates of Chemistry Education enjoy productive careers in public and private schools run by the Ministry of National Education as teachers and work in these institutions as teachers and in many other areas of the public service as civil servants. In addition, students may work in the chemistry related areas of the private sector.

Access to Further Studies

Graduates may apply to post doctorate studies.
PhD graduates who successfully completed the PhD program may apply to associate professor in the same or in related disciplines via accomplishing the conditions of application.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Students must attend classes, practices and examinations. In order for students to qualify for midterms they should attend 70% of the theoretical classes and 80% of the application/lab classes. Students attendance is followed by their Instructor. For almost all required and elective courses there are two written examinations: One midterm examination (given during each semester and dates of which are announced by the Department in the first month of the semester) and one final exam. The instructor announces the weekly course content, the course book and how students will be evaluated and the dates of the exams to the students and the Institute at the beginning of the semester. The instructor evaluated the students depending on their midterm and final grades, attendance to the class, their additional work such as projects, presentations and assignments which were presented at the beginning of the semester.
A make up exam is offered for graduate classes. Upon the approval of the Institute Board students can take the exam from the lessons that they have already passed in order to increase their GPA.
To be able to pass a lesson a graduate student must have minimum CB.

Graduation Requirements

Third Cycle (Doctorate Degree) Program is comprised of at least 7 courses (minimum 21, maximum 30 national credits) more than, passing a qualifying examination, preparing and defending a doctoral dissertation, in total 240 ECTS credits.
The programme consists of a minimum of seven courses delivered within the graduate programme of the department and in related fields, one seminar course, and thesis, with a minimum of 21 local credits. The total ECTS credits of the programme is 240 ECTS. Graduation requirements in detail are explained in the section "Qualification Requirements and Regulations".
