General Description

History

Dokuz Eylül University, Department of Linguistics was founded in 1998. Our department continues its educational and scientific activities with 7 instructors and 3 lecturers. 5 research assistants who are appointed within 35th article under the scope of 2547 number of Higher Education Law.

In line with its mission, the Department of Linguistics adopts a broad and a holistic perspective that projects language and its biological, psychological and sociological aspects as a single whole.

The mission of Department of Linguistics is primarily to contribute the studies on Turkish Linguistics, and to present competent studies in this context of research as well as to conduct studies with respect to the fields considered to be missing in linguistics literature in Turkish, and to provide educational and scientific contribution in terms of proper use and training of Turkish.

Specific Admission Requirements

The department of Linguistics admits students on the basis of the criterion of foreign language score by means of YGS which is held by ÖSYM.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

The educational experiences of our students before the registration to the department of Linguistics are evaluated within the scope of The Regulations Concerning the Basics of Transferring the Credits between Institutions, and the Basics of Transfer between the Associate Degree and Undergraduate Degree, Double Major and Minor in High Education Institutions. Provided that the student has already completed some of the courses existing in the educational plan successfully in previous institutions in which s/he has his/her education, s/he can be held exempt from all or some of the courses in accordance with the adaptation committee.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

In order to graduate from the Undergraduate Program of Linguistics Department, it is required that the students complete all the courses equivalent of 240 ECTS offered in the educational plan of 8 semesters, and they have the 2.00 grade point average over 4.00.

Profile of the Programme

The objective of the undergraduate program of the department of Linguistics: to raise linguists who are equipped with the knowledge, skill and competence that may serve in any field on which linguistics can be applied; who have the social sense of responsibility and ethical values; who can interpret the effects of the changes and developments in local and global dimensions over linguistics by following them; who transfer the theoretical knowledge they acquire into practice; and who develop their existing potential under national and international conditions.

The language of instruction of the Linguistics undergraduate program is Turkish. However, many researches are produced in English both in our country and abroad. Therefore, the program has an optional English preparatory class.

An agreement has been reached between Linguistics Department and Philosophy Department in the matter of carrying out double major and minor. In this line, the students of the department of Linguistics who provide the specified conditions in The Regulations of Double Major and Minor of our university can have a double major or a minor in the department of Philosophy.
Key Learning Outcomes

Key learning outcomes of the department of Linguistics:
LO1. Demonstrating knowledge of basic linguistic concepts and theories.
LO2. Using and applying theoretical and applied linguistic knowledge on the fields of teaching, researching and public service.
LO3. Demonstrating knowledge of phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics in Turkish.
LO4. Demonstrating knowledge of the relation between linguistics and sociology, philosophy, ethnology, psychology, neurology, computer sciences, translation studies and forensic sciences; and the interdisciplinary studies of linguistics with these aforementioned disciplines
LO5. Demonstrating the abiliy to collect data, analyse, interprete critically, evaluate and present recommendations for solving problems orally or in written format.
LO6. To be able to classify languages typologically, to have knowledge abaout languages and to speak abaout language.
LO7. Demonstrating competent use of computer software and information Technologies within the requirements of the linguistics program.
LO8. To be able to study individually or as a member of a group, and to be able to take responsibility.
LO9. Demonstrating the abiliy to follow the developments in Linguistics and in the world with a motivation to engage in lifelong learning and evaluate them globally
LO10. Demonstrating the abiliy to communicate effectively both orally and in written format with the prominent people and institutions in the field.
LO11. To be able to make researches on micro and macro fields of linguistics.
LO12. To be able to produce academic texts in micro and macro fields of linguistics.
LO13. Demonstrating the abiliy to conduct interdisciplinary research and studies in the field.
LO14. Demonstrating the abiliy to identify learning needs of himself/herself and other group members and supporting their progress by using the knowledge and competence in the field.

6   Demonstrating the abiliy to translate from Turkish into English, German and Russian and vice versa at different levels of difficulty.
7   Demonstrating competent use of computer software and information Technologies within the requirements of the linguistics program

9   Demonstrating the ability to follow the developments in Linguistics and in the world with a motivation to engage in lifelong learning and evaluate them globally.

11   Demonstrating the abiliy to follow theoretical and applied knowledge and communicate effectively with people and institutions in the field at level B2 Common European Framework of Reference.

13   Demonstrating the abiliy to conduct interdisciplinary research and studies in the field.
14   Demonstrating the abiliy to identify learning needs of himself/herself and other group members and supporting their progress by using the knowledge and competence in the field.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

This degree enables the holder to exercise the profession in the public or private enterprises. The graduates may be employed as Turkish or English lecturers within the body of university rectorate and the school of foreign languages, and they may be employed as a research assistants within the body of faculties of university. In addition to academic career, our graduates may, in a successful way, as well carry out such duties as translators, consultancy in visual and audio communication units of various companies, editor in institutions operating in media and advertisement, copywriting, inspectorship in terms of correct language use in domestic and foreign correspondence of official or private institutions, and ad writing in advertisement agencies.

Access to Further Studies

Candidates who successfully completed their undergraduate educations may take their graduate studies in such fields as Linguistics, Turkish Teaching, and Teaching Turkish as a Foreign Language and Translation Studies.

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

Courses corresponding to 240 ECTS in total are offered to students in the undergraduate program of Linguistics. It is required that students take 44 must courses as well as 14 elective courses.Second Foreign Languages within 44 must courses continue through six semesters starting from the 3rd semester until 8th semester, and German or Russian are the options to be selected.10 courses of elective courses have been identified as Departmental Elective and for these 10 courses, students may choose among 22 courses that the department offers. 4 courses of elective courses have been identified as Non-departmental Elective and students may choose a course from other departments or from departments of other faculties. 6 out of 44 must courses and 4 out of 22 elective courses offered in Undergraduate Program are carried out in English.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Various assessment and grading methods for each course within the Undergraduate Curriculum of Linguistics Department may be used such as written examination, oral examination, homework preparation, conducting a research, graduation project or class performance evaluation. The method of assessment and grading applied in each course has been defined in detail in "Course Introduction Form".

Graduation Requirements

The degree is awarded to students who have successfully completed all the courses in the curriculum and have a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.00 / 4.00 and 240 ECTS.Graduation requirements are as stated in the chapter Qualification requirement and regulations.
