General Description

History

Dokuz Eylül University, Department of General Linguistics was founded in 2000. In line with its mission, the Department of Linguistics adopts a broad and holistic perspective which projects language and its biological, psychological and sociological aspects as a single whole. During the Bologna Process executed in Dokuz Eylül University in 2011-2012 academic year, the curriculum of the department has been updated in compliance with the EU standards and numerous elective courses were added to the program to offer our students a more innovative education.
The Department of General Linguistics struggles to ensure that our students obtain scientific knowledge about and perspective on language and provide various institutions with qualified studies and qualified labour force by encouraging the students to do scientific research and applications on language. Our Department aims primarily at contributing the Turkish Linguistics studies and present competent studies in this field of research; conducting studies in areas which are thought to lack concern, and providing educational and scientific contribution in terms of proper use and training of Turkish.

Specific Admission Requirements

Second Cycle (Master's Degree) diploma; a minimum Cum. GPA of 80/100 or 3/4; a minimum score of 60 from the nation-wide Academic Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) in the related field or GRE/GMAT equivalent; a minimum score of 60 from the Foreign Language Exams (ÜDS/KPDS/YDS/e-YDS/YÖKDİL) or from equivalent foreign language proficiency exam approved by OSYM. Transcript; a minimum score of 75 from the graduate school academic proficiency exam.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Transfer Students:
The transfer student candidates from Turkish or foreign universities are subject to the YOK Legislation "The transfer, double degree, minor degree and inter-institutional credit transfer" and to the evaluation conditions determined by Dokuz Eylul University Senate.
The transfer quotas are determined and announced by Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK). The evaluation of the candidates are done by the school evaluation commmisin and approved by the management

The Graduate Transfers:
The short cycle graduates are given the right to be admitted to the first cycle programs if they comply with the conditions set by the "The transfer of Short Cycle Program Graduates to First Cycle Programs" Legilation of Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK)
The universities inform YOK regarding the quotas and YOK announces the quotas and conditions in "Graduate Transfer Guide" and the placements are managed by YOK due to the results of nationwide graduate transfer exam.

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be
recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing
Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

4 years, 2 semesters per year,16 weeks per semester, 240 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

Our department continues its educational and scientific activities with 1 professor, 2 Associate Professors, 3 Assistant Professors, 4 lecturers and 1 research assistant. Moreover the department serves with one study-room, one lecture room and a full accessible Department Library (Prof. Dr. Semiramis YĞCIOĞLU Library).

Key Learning Outcomes

1   Improving, deepening linguistic knowledge at the doctoral level based on graduate level qualifications and to produce authentic findings to bring novelty into science
2   Interpreting the studies on language and education, language and brain, language and gender, linguistic typology, cognitive linguistics, pragmatics and discourse analysis and to enhance the knowledge in these areas
3   Dealing with new information in linguistics in a systemmatic approach and obtaining the highest level of skills in research methods pertaining to linguistics
4   Ability to define and describe the functions of discourse in communicative contexts and to make evaluations within a discourse analytic framework
5   Conducting studies on teaching Turkish as a foreign language that would contribute to language policies
6   Evaluating, in an academic fashion, the biological, neurological, psychological and cognitive aspects of language
7   Following the literature on the organization, production and analysis of written texts and to conduct novel studies
8   Conducting studies on the social, psychological, cultural and gender aspects of language
9   Thinking creatively and critically, producing an authentic study and contributing in science
10   Implementing and developing new theoretical approaches to syntax of Turkish
11   Ability to conduct high level academic debates in at least in one foreign language
12   Analysing and evaluating new and complex ideas in the field and to produce new ideas on top of these complex ideas, contributing the evolution towards information society
13   Ability to establish communication using the academic and professional strategic decision making processes and thusly offer solutions to social, scientific and ethical issue

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

The graduates of the department may obtain positions in various institutions as supervisors, redactors, editors, and auditors. Among our previous graduates, some of them work as redactors in publishing houses, as free-lance translators, as language instructors in some private colleges and in some universities. Also, some of our graduates continued their academic career mostly in applied linguistics (Turkish as a Foreign Language) and neurolinguistics.

Access to Further Studies

Graduates may apply to post doctorate studies.

The courses in our department are taken termly. There is no prerequisited courses for the program. Each and every student must take 5 (five) courses for each term and these courses are selected among the courses stated in that term.

Graduation Requirements

Third Cycle (Doctorate Degree) Program with thesis is comprised of courses (81 ECTS), a field study (6 ECTS), a seminar (3 ECTS) and thesis (150 ECTS), in total 240 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB/S/TP grades.
